Natural Zircon is an earth-formed
gemstone—not cubic zirconia, a manufactured imitation with a similar name.

1. An Ancient Name, Carefully Understood
The modern name zircon is
connected with the Persian زرگون — zargūn, meaning “gold-coloured” or
“gold-like.”
Classical Indian texts use names such as gomeda
for several honey, red-brown and golden stones. Historical identifications are
inconsistent: some scholars connect these descriptions with Natural Zircon,
while later astrological usage generally identifies gomeda with
hessonite garnet.
Moraebi does not present an uncertain
historical name as proof that every ancient gomeda was Natural Zircon.
We identify this gemstone by its modern gemological name and composition: Natural
Zircon, zirconium silicate—ZrSiO₄.
This distinction matters because Natural
Zircon is an ancient earth-formed gemstone entirely separate from cubic
zirconia.
2. The Astrological Standard for Natural Zircon
Natural Zircon is naturally brilliant.
Its strong interaction with light can produce flashes of colour and a subtle
doubling of facet edges when viewed through the gemstone.
Natural Zircon may contain crystals,
needles, growth zoning or partially healed fractures. Some Natural Zircons also
have a softer or slightly hazy appearance caused by natural changes within
their crystal structure over geological time.
These characteristics are like the
gemstone’s birthmarks. Laboratories study its optical properties, spectrum,
inclusions and crystal structure to identify Natural Zircon and detect
treatment.
Moraebi accepts natural inclusions. We
avoid Natural Zircons with significant surface-reaching fractures, heavily
abraded facets, vulnerable edges or internal damage that could weaken a jewel
intended for continuous wear.
3. The Brilliance Must Be Natural. Never Treated.
Natural Zircon occurs in brown, honey,
yellow, orange, red, green and occasionally near-colourless tones. An untreated
Natural Zircon may appear warmer, smokier or more included than the bright blue
and colourless stones commonly seen in the wider market.
Natural Zircon is frequently heated to
produce blue or colourless stones. Nearly all strongly blue Natural Zircons and
many near-colourless Natural Zircons have undergone heat treatment. Fracture
filling is possible, although uncommon.
Moraebi selects only Natural Zircon
with no evidence of treatment.
For astrological jewellery, we never
confuse Natural Zircon with cubic zirconia. Natural Zircon forms within the
earth; cubic zirconia is manufactured in a laboratory and has a different
composition and crystal structure.

been specifically recommended as an acceptable substitute.

through established and trusted suppliers, then gets it cut and polished by
experienced lapidaries in Jaipur.
Natural Zircon is exceptionally brilliant
but can be brittle. The lapidary must preserve the recommended ratti, position
its colour carefully and create balanced facets without leaving vulnerable
edges.
The aim is not simply to produce the
greatest possible sparkle or retain the largest possible weight. The cut must
reveal the gemstone’s natural fire while creating a structurally sound form for
the jewel it will become.
By remaining closely involved, Moraebi
follows each Natural Zircon through rough selection, cutting, certification and
design.

Natural zircon is a gemstone that formed within the earth.
Some zircon crystals are among the oldest minerals ever dated—approximately 4.4 billion years old.
Cubic zirconia, commonly abbreviated to CZ, is a manufactured diamond imitation.
It is not a variety of zircon.
A product described only as “zircon” should be supported by a gemological report.
Moraebi selects certified natural zircon—not cubic zirconia.
A well-cut colourless zircon can appear remarkably brilliant, which is why it was confused with diamond for centuries. Zircon’s fire is its own natural optical property; it does not make the gemstone a diamond imitation.
Cut matters greatly.
If the proportions are poorly balanced, a zircon may appear glassy, dark or empty despite its natural brilliance.
When you look through some zircons, the edges of the facets on the back of the gemstone may appear doubled or slightly blurred.
This is a natural optical property—not evidence that the stone is assembled, cracked or false.
The effect depends on the viewing direction and how the zircon was cut.
A skilled cutter manages this doubling while preserving the fire and weight of the gemstone.

Chemically pure zircon would be colourless, but trace elements and changes within its crystal structure create its varied palette.
Many untreated zircons are naturally yellowish, brownish, smoky or golden.

Zircon can be brittle.
Its facet edges may abrade or chip if repeatedly struck or rubbed against harder materials.
Some astrological traditions also avoid heavily fractured, damaged, dull or prominently spotted gemstones.
These are traditional suitability standards—not scientifically established measures of astrological effect.
Moraebi distinguishes natural internal character from structural weakness.
Heat treatment is common, particularly for blue and colourless zircon.
Heating brownish material can produce blue, colourless or other commercially desirable colours.
A heated zircon is still natural zircon, but it is not untreated.
Some heat-produced colours may change or return towards their original brownish appearance after prolonged exposure to bright light.
Zircon may also occasionally be fracture-filled, although this is less common.
Moraebi selects certified natural, untreated zircon for astrological jewellery. If a vivid blue zircon is being offered as untreated, that claim deserves particularly careful laboratory verification.
Its affordability alone is not a warning sign.
However, ask questions if the material is described vaguely or its identity is unsupported.

The certificate should say natural zircon and disclose detectable treatment. “American diamond,” “zirconia” and “zircon” are not interchangeable descriptions.

Natural means the zircon formed within the earth.
Untreated means no treatment has been detected to alter its colour or apparent clarity.
Certified means the gemstone has been examined and described in a laboratory report.
Colour less describes its appearance.
It does not establish natural origin or treatment status.
A natural zircon may be heat-treated to become colour less or blue.
An untreated zircon may be golden, brownish, smoky or visibly included. Moraebi states each fact separately.
Gem zircon occurs in Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Tanzania, Madagascar, Australia and other locations.
Origin may contribute to the gemstone’s history, but colour, brilliance, cut, clarity, structural condition, treatment and size are generally more useful buying considerations.
A standard zircon identification report will not necessarily establish geographic origin.
Supplier origin and laboratory-determined origin are not the same thing.
